If your RiderNav R7M doesn’t turn on at all (no screen, no boot logo), the issue is usually caused by either:
No power / weak contact from the BMW cradle, or
A hardware power issue on the device itself
This guide walks you through a quick, reliable test to pinpoint the cause.
Before You Start
R7M has no internal battery and must be powered by the BMW cradle (just like a BMW Navigator).
Make sure your motorcycle ignition is ON when testing on the cradle.
If possible, test in a dry, clean environment to avoid dust or moisture around the cradle contacts.
Step 1: Reseat the R7M on the BMW Cradle
Sometimes the R7M needs a slightly firmer, more even press to fully seat into the cradle.
Insert the R7M into the cradle as normal
Apply a firm, even press until it feels fully “clicked” in place
Turn ignition ON and check whether the screen powers up
If it still doesn’t turn on, continue below.
Step 2: Clean and Inspect the Cradle Contacts
A poor connection on the cradle pogo pins is one of the most common reasons for “no power.”
Check the cradle’s gold pins/contacts for dust, oxidation, or debris
Gently clean the contacts and ensure they are dry
Reinstall the R7M and test again
Still no power? Proceed to the USB test.
Step 3: Direct USB Power Test (Most Important)
This test helps confirm whether the issue is the device itself or the cradle power connection.
What you’ll need
The small screwdriver included in the package
A USB-A to USB-C cable (avoid USB-C to USB-C high-power cables)
A charger or laptop providing at least 5V / 2A
USB cable is not included
How to test
Use the screwdriver to open the back panel and access the USB-C port
Connect using a USB-A to USB-C cable to a 5V/2A power source
Observe whether the R7M shows any signs of life (boot logo / screen activity)
Important waterproof note
After testing, make sure the screws and waterproof gasket are fully tightened.
If the seal is not restored correctly, water may enter the unit—this is not covered under warranty.
How to Read the Results
If the R7M powers on via USB
That’s good news: it usually means the R7M hardware is working and the issue is likely:
cradle pins not making stable contact
cradle power not present / unstable
fitment not fully seated
At this point, re-test on the cradle after cleaning and firmly seating the unit.
If available, a cross-bike cradle test (on another BMW Nav Prep cradle) is also helpful to confirm whether the problem is specific to one bike/cradle.
If the R7M still won’t power on via USB
This points to a likely device-side power issue.
