TPMS Caliper Clearance & Fitment Check — Before You Install

Check if the RiderNav External TPMS Sensor fits your motorcycle before ordering.

The RiderNav External TPMS Sensor mounts on top of your motorcycle's valve stem. On most bikes, this works perfectly. On some motorcycles, the brake caliper sits very close to the valve stem — and an external sensor of any brand can touch or clip the caliper while the wheel rotates.

Before you order, please check that your motorcycle has enough clearance for the sensor. It only takes a few minutes and prevents a lot of headaches later.

The sensor adds roughly 15.8 mm of height above your existing valve stem. That's the key measurement for checking clearance.


How to Check Clearance (Before You Order)

You don't need the sensor in-hand. A ruler or caliper is enough.

1. Find the closest point of your brake caliper to the valve stem. Look at your wheel from the side. The caliper is the bracket that squeezes the brake disc.

2. Measure the gap between the top of your valve stem and the caliper. The gap should be at least 20 mm (sensor height 15.8 mm + safety margin) at every point in the wheel's rotation.

3. Rotate the wheel slowly. The caliper is at different distances from the valve at different points in rotation. The tightest point is what matters — not the average.

4. Squeeze the brake lever and check again. When braking, the caliper moves slightly. Confirm clearance both with the brake released and applied.

5. Consider pad wear. Brake pads wear over time, and the caliper piston moves inward as they do. If your bike has only 1-2 mm of margin today, that gap will shrink.

If clearance is tight or you're not sure — do not order for that wheel. Contact us instead (see below).


Motorcycles with Known Tight Clearance

The following motorcycles are known to have tight caliper-to-valve clearance. The RiderNav External TPMS Sensor may not fit safely on these bikes:

  • BMW R 1250 RT

  • BMW R 1200 R (2015)

  • BMW C 400 GT (front and rear)

  • BMW C 400 X (front and rear)

  • Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak (2016)

This list is not exhaustive. If your bike isn't listed but the caliper visibly sits near the valve stem, please confirm clearance before ordering.


Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the RiderNav External TPMS fit my motorcycle?

On most motorcycles, yes. On some bikes with tight brake caliper-to-valve clearance, an external sensor may not fit safely. Check the "Motorcycles with Known Tight Clearance" list above, and use the clearance check steps to confirm.

Q: What are the exact dimensions of the sensor?

21.5 mm × 21.5 mm × 15.8 mm. The height (15.8 mm) is the critical measurement — that's how much space the sensor takes above your valve stem.

Q: My brake caliper is close to my valve stem. Can I still install TPMS?

It depends on how close. You need at least 20 mm of clearance between the top of your valve stem and the closest point of your caliper — measured through the full wheel rotation, with brake applied. If you have less than that, this sensor may not be safe to install.

Q: What if my motorcycle isn't on the "known issues" list?

The list only covers bikes we've confirmed. Many other motorcycles also have limited clearance. Always do the physical clearance check on your own bike before ordering.

Q: Does RiderNav offer internal TPMS sensors?

Not at this time. Our current TPMS lineup is limited to the External Sensor. We're evaluating additional options for future release — subscribe to our newsletter to be notified when internal or low-profile options become available.

Q: Does RiderNav offer a low-profile valve stem to fix caliper clearance issues?

Not at this time. If your motorcycle can't safely fit an external sensor, we recommend using your bike's factory-equipped TPMS (if available) or waiting for future RiderNav TPMS products.

Q: What if I install the sensor and the clearance turns out to be too tight?

Do not ride the motorcycle. Remove the sensor immediately. Any contact between the sensor and caliper while the wheel rotates can cause damage to the sensor, the caliper, or sudden air loss from the tire.


Post-Installation Reminders

If your bike has confirmed clearance and you install the sensor, please observe these safety checks:

  1. After installation — inflate to spec, rotate the wheel slowly, and confirm no contact throughout the full rotation.

  2. After your first short ride — re-check clearance. Heat and settling can change gaps slightly.

  3. After any tire service — always rebalance the wheel and re-check sensor clearance.

  4. Leak test — apply soapy water to the valve base. Any bubbles = sealing issue = do not ride.
