Using the RLC CAN-X — Wonder Wheel & BMW Integration

Master every Wonder Wheel gesture and switchgear function that controls your Q5 Pro — from 4-level dimming to headlight-tracking sync, cruise strobe activation, and turn signal follow — all through your BMW's native controls.

Before You Start

This guide covers how to use your RLC CAN-X once it's installed and paired with your BMW's CAN bus. If you haven't installed it yet, start with our Installing the RLC CAN-X BMW Controller guide first.

Unlike a standalone controller with its own buttons, the RLC CAN-X doesn't add new hardware to your handlebar. Every function in this guide is triggered through controls your BMW already has — primarily the Multi-Controller (Wonder Wheel) and your flash-to-pass button.


A Note on Terminology

Throughout this guide we use two terms interchangeably:

  • Multi-Controller — BMW's official name for the thumb-operated control on your left switchgear

  • Wonder Wheel — the community nickname used by BMW riders worldwide

Both refer to the same control. We use "Wonder Wheel" for clarity because that's how most riders describe it.


The Core Idea

Your BMW's left switchgear already contains most of what you need to operate Q5 Pro. The RLC CAN-X teaches your bike's existing controls a set of new gestures:

  • Wonder Wheel rotation — brightness control

  • Wonder Wheel short-press — on/off with memory

  • Flash-to-pass button (5× in 5 sec) — cruise strobe activation

  • Your bike's built-in signals (turn, hazard, headlight, horn) — automatically drive the spotlights

Nothing on your original BMW controls changes. When you're navigating menus or using your bike normally, everything behaves exactly as it always has.


1. Turning Your Spotlights On and Off — With Memory

How to do it: Short-press the Wonder Wheel to power your Q5 Pro on or off.

  • First press → spotlights turn on at your last-used brightness level

  • Second press → spotlights turn off, saving your current brightness setting

This is the Memory On/Off feature. Your RLC CAN-X precisely remembers your last brightness level between rides — even after you fully turn off your bike and remove the key. Power on the next day and your setting is right where you left it.


2. Adjusting Brightness — 4-Level Dimming

How to do it: Rotate the Wonder Wheel while spotlight control is active.

The RLC CAN-X maps your Wonder Wheel rotation to four preset brightness levels:

  • Level 1 — Low (city, slow speed, mixed traffic)

  • Level 2 — Medium-low (backroads, moderate darkness)

  • Level 3 — Medium-high (highway, rural darkness)

  • Level 4 — Full output (deep darkness, maximum reach)

Each detent of the Wonder Wheel steps you up or down one level. You'll feel the click as your bike's Multi-Controller registers each selection.

Why 4 levels instead of infinite dimming? The RLC CAN-X mirrors how BMW's own systems work — every menu, setting, and adjustment on your bike happens in discrete, predictable steps. This gives you consistent, repeatable settings you can dial in without looking. Lighting performance at each level is identical to the RLC3 Universal Controller.


3. Cruise Strobe — Sustained Attention-Grabbing Flash

How to do it: Press your flash-to-pass button 5 times within 5 seconds. Your Q5 Pro spotlights immediately enter a sustained strobe pattern.

To exit: Press the flash-to-pass button once more. Spotlights return to your previous brightness and mode.

Cruise Strobe is designed for situations where you need prolonged high visibility, not a brief attention grab:

  • Riding through low-visibility zones (fog banks, dust, construction areas)

  • Leading or trailing a group ride where you want to remain identifiable

  • Escorting or shepherding another vehicle

  • Roadside emergencies where you're waiting for assistance

Why the 5-in-5 gesture? This deliberate pattern is impossible to trigger accidentally. Your normal flash-to-pass use (one or two quick presses to signal traffic) works exactly as before — you'd have to consciously repeat 5 times to activate the strobe mode.

Important: Cruise Strobe is a powerful attention-getting mode. Extended use while riding at speed can be distracting to other road users and may violate local traffic regulations. Check your local laws before use.


4. Turn Signal Sync — Automatic

How to do it: No action needed — this works automatically through the CAN bus.

When you activate your left or right turn signal, the corresponding side spotlight flashes in sync with your indicator. Drivers behind and beside you get an additional, larger, brighter visual cue that you're changing direction — especially valuable at night or in heavy traffic.

  • Left turn signal → left spotlight syncs

  • Right turn signal → right spotlight syncs

  • Signal off → spotlight returns to your set brightness

This works because the RLC CAN-X reads turn signal state directly from your motorcycle's electronics through the CAN bus — no additional wiring required.


5. Hazard Light Sync — Automatic

How to do it: Activate your BMW's hazard lights as you normally would. Q5 Pro spotlights automatically follow.

When your bike's hazards are on, both spotlights enter a synchronized flashing pattern matched to your bike's original hazard signal. Turn hazards off and spotlights return to your previous mode and brightness.

Roadside stops become dramatically more visible from distance. Group ride markers (lead or sweep positions) get consistent, coordinated signaling. Hazard zones you're navigating are clearly announced to all traffic around you.

Why this is different from Cruise Strobe: Hazard sync mirrors your bike's original hazard state — the spotlights follow whatever your bike is signaling. Cruise Strobe is an independent, more aggressive attention mode you activate deliberately. Use hazard sync for situations where you're already using your bike's hazards; use Cruise Strobe when you need sustained visibility beyond what your bike's hazards provide.


6. Headlight-Tracking Sync — Automatic

How to do it: No action needed. Your Q5 Pro spotlights automatically follow your bike's headlight state:

  • High beam on → spotlights automatically at high brightness

  • Low beam on → spotlights automatically at low brightness

This is more sophisticated than a simple "boost on high beam" — the RLC CAN-X tracks your headlight in both directions, giving you a lighting system that behaves consistently with what your bike is doing.

In practice: You never need to think about matching your spotlight brightness to your riding conditions. When you're in town or approaching traffic and drop to low beam, your Q5 Pro dims to match. Flash your high beam to warn oncoming traffic or approach a dark stretch, and your Q5 Pro brightens instantly. It's an all-day lighting system that just works with you.

Because the RLC CAN-X reads headlight state directly from the CAN bus, response is instantaneous — no perceptible delay between your beam change and the spotlight adjustment.


7. Horn-Triggered Strobe — Automatic

How to do it: Press your motorcycle's horn. Spotlights strobe in time with the horn sound.

Horn-Triggered Strobe creates a powerful audio-visual alert — the combination of horn and rapid flashing is dramatically more effective than horn alone for cutting through distraction:

  • Drivers looking at phones at intersections

  • Vehicles merging without seeing you

  • Wildlife or pedestrians crossing at night

  • Any situation where you need immediate multi-sensory attention

The strobe lasts as long as you hold the horn, then returns to your previous setting.

Like all the safety-signal features above, horn-triggered strobe works automatically — the RLC CAN-X reads your horn signal directly from the CAN bus. There's no separate wire to connect, no installation option to enable, and no configuration to worry about. If your RLC CAN-X is installed and communicating with your bike, this feature is already working.

Tip: Use this feature judiciously. Its effectiveness comes from being unexpected — reserve it for genuine attention-getting situations rather than routine honking.

The Advantage of CAN Bus Integration

Most of the RLC CAN-X's most useful features happen automatically, without you doing anything. That's the whole point of CAN bus integration.

Instead of asking you to add buttons, flip switches, or memorize new controls, the RLC CAN-X reads your motorcycle's existing signals — turn, hazard, headlight — directly from your bike's electronics. The result is a lighting system that feels like it was built by BMW itself, because it's genuinely responding to your bike the same way your factory accessories do.

For horn-triggered strobe, one included cable connects directly to your bike's horn circuit — a deliberate design choice to guarantee consistent, instant response across every compatible BMW model.


Learning Curve — What to Expect

Most BMW riders master the RLC CAN-X's core functions within a single ride:

  • First 5 minutes — On/off and 4-level brightness feel natural

  • First 30 minutes — The 5-in-5 Cruise Strobe gesture becomes familiar

  • First real ride — Turn signal and headlight sync become invisible (they just work)

  • First week — All functions feel like part of your bike

Because the RLC CAN-X uses controls you already know, there's genuinely no "learning" for most of it — you're just discovering that your bike now does more.


Frequently Asked Questions

Do I lose any of my BMW's original Wonder Wheel or switchgear functions?
No. Your BMW's menu navigation, flash-to-pass, and all other controls continue to work exactly as before. The RLC CAN-X adds new gestures on top of existing behavior — it never replaces your original functions.

Will my normal flash-to-pass use accidentally trigger Cruise Strobe?
Extremely unlikely. Cruise Strobe requires 5 deliberate presses within 5 seconds — a pattern that doesn't occur in normal riding. A quick single or double flash to warn traffic works exactly as it always has.

Why 4 brightness levels instead of infinite dimming?
The RLC CAN-X's 4-level design matches how BMW's own systems work — every menu, setting, and adjustment on your bike happens in discrete steps. This makes Q5 Pro behave like a factory feature. If you prefer continuous dimming and are open to a handlebar-mounted dial, the RLC3 Universal Controller is also compatible with your bike.

Does turn signal sync work with self-canceling signals?
Yes. The RLC CAN-X reads turn signal state directly from your bike's electronics and follows exactly what your bike is signaling — including automatic cancellation.

How exactly does headlight-tracking sync work if I'm running high beam continuously on an empty road?
It stays at high brightness for as long as your high beam is on. Drop back to low beam and it steps down to low brightness. There's no timer or manual reset — it purely follows your headlight.

What happens during a low-battery situation on my bike?
The RLC CAN-X prioritizes your bike's core systems. If battery voltage drops critically, spotlight power reduces or shuts off before it can affect starting or safety systems. Normal operation resumes as soon as voltage is restored.

Is the horn sync cable included, or do I need to buy it separately?
The horn sync cable is included with every RLC CAN-X — it's a standard component in the box, not a separate purchase.

Can I install RLC CAN-X on a BMW model that isn't on the compatibility list?
No. RLC CAN-X is designed for specific CAN bus configurations. Installing on an unsupported BMW could cause communication errors with your bike's electronics. If your model isn't on our list, the RLC3 Universal Controller is your alternative — same lighting performance through a handlebar dial.

Do all these features work identically on every compatible BMW model?
Core functions (on/off, dimming, hazard sync, headlight-tracking sync, Cruise Strobe, horn-triggered strobe) work on all compatible BMW models. A small number of details (e.g., specific turn signal sync behavior on certain generations) may vary slightly. Consult your RLC CAN-X model-specific reference card for full details.
