Short Answer
Your Q5 Pro is not broken. This is one of the most common questions we hear from new RLC CAN-X users, and the fix takes about 5 seconds.
The RLC CAN-X uses an activation gesture to wake up spotlight control mode on your Wonder Wheel. Without activation, the Wonder Wheel continues to work only for your BMW's original functions — menu navigation, settings, and so on. It won't try to control your spotlights until you tell it to.
There are two scenarios below. Find the one that matches what you're experiencing, and follow the corresponding activation steps.
Scenario 1 — Spotlights Are Completely Off, Wonder Wheel Won't Turn Them On
What you're seeing:
Ignition is ON
Your Q5 Pro spotlights are dark — no white light, no yellow DRL
Rotating or pressing the Wonder Wheel does nothing
Why this happens:
The spotlights haven't been powered on yet. The Wonder Wheel can only adjust spotlights that are already active — it doesn't turn them on from a fully off state. That command is assigned to your turn signal switch.
How to Fix It
Use your BMW's turn signal switch to power on the spotlights:
Option A — Long-press for 1 second
Press and hold the turn signal switch for approximately 1 second. Release. Your Q5 Pro will power on.
Option B — Triple-press quickly
Press the turn signal switch three times in rapid succession. Your Q5 Pro will power on.
Either method works. Choose whichever feels more natural to you.
Once the spotlights are on (either the yellow DRL or the last-used white beam setting), the Wonder Wheel will respond to your inputs.
Scenario 2 — Yellow DRL Is On, But Wonder Wheel Still Won't Control the Spotlights
What you're seeing:
Ignition is ON
Your Q5 Pro's yellow daytime running light is glowing
Rotating the Wonder Wheel does nothing to adjust brightness or switch beams
Why this happens:
The spotlights are powered on, but the Wonder Wheel isn't currently in spotlight control mode. Your BMW's Wonder Wheel handles many functions — menu navigation, bike settings, and now spotlights — so it needs to know which one you want to control right now.
How to Fix It
Long-press the Wonder Wheel to the right for 3–5 seconds.
You'll see your Q5 Pro spotlights briefly flash as confirmation — this signals that spotlight control mode is now active on your Wonder Wheel.
Once you see the flash, the Wonder Wheel will respond normally:
Rotate to adjust brightness across the 4 levels
Short-press for on/off with memory
All other RLC CAN-X features work as documented
⏱️ Important — About the 5-Second Timeout
Spotlight control mode stays active while you're using it. But if you don't touch the Wonder Wheel for 5 seconds, it automatically returns to your BMW's default menu navigation mode.
This means: the next time you want to adjust your spotlights through the Wonder Wheel, you'll need to repeat the right-side long-press activation (Scenario 2 fix above).
Why is it designed this way?
So that when you're using your Wonder Wheel for its normal BMW functions — reading trip info, adjusting bike settings, browsing menus — your inputs don't accidentally change your spotlight brightness. The 5-second timeout keeps the two functions cleanly separated.
In practice: most riders adjust their spotlight brightness once at the start of a ride and rarely need to change it again. The occasional re-activation gesture takes less than a second and quickly becomes second nature.
Quick Reference Card
Print this or save it for your first few rides:
Situation | Action |
Spotlights fully off | Turn signal switch: long-press 1 sec OR triple-press |
Yellow DRL on, need Wonder Wheel control | Wonder Wheel: long-press RIGHT 3–5 sec until spotlights flash |
No Wonder Wheel activity for 5 seconds | Re-activate with the right-side long-press before your next adjustment |
💡 Pro Tip — Verify Before You Finalize Your Installation
Here's something we strongly recommend to every RLC CAN-X installer, especially if you're doing the install yourself:
Complete the electrical connections first, then verify everything works — BEFORE you cover panels, secure cables permanently, or button up your bike.
The Recommended Verification Sequence
Step 1 — Make the core electrical connections:
Plug the RLC CAN-X into your BMW's CAN adapter cable
Connect the CAN adapter to your bike's CAN bus port
Connect the XT60 power cable to the controller
Connect the spotlight extension cables to the controller
Connect the spotlight extension cables to the actual spotlights
Step 2 — Do NOT yet:
Remove and reinstall body panels
Zip-tie cables into their final routing
Reinstall the fuse box or side panels permanently
Step 3 — Test everything with the bike running:
Turn on the ignition
Use the turn signal long-press to power on the spotlights (Scenario 1 fix)
Use the Wonder Wheel right-side long-press to activate control (Scenario 2 fix)
Verify all functions: brightness levels, beam modes, turn signal sync, hazard sync, headlight tracking, horn strobe
Step 4 — Only after everything works correctly:
Route and secure cables permanently
Reinstall body panels
Complete the physical installation
Why This Order Matters
If you finalize the installation first and then discover a connection issue or something needs to be repositioned, you'll have to remove panels and undo cable routing to fix it. This can add hours to what should be a straightforward job.
The 10 minutes of testing before final assembly saves you from that scenario entirely.
When to Actually Contact Support
The two scenarios above are the most common "not working" situations, and both are simply activation issues — not faults. However, if you've tried the activation gestures and still see any of the following, that's when to reach out:
Spotlights don't respond to the turn signal long-press or triple-press
Wonder Wheel doesn't produce a flash when you long-press to the right for 3–5 seconds
Only one spotlight responds, not both
Spotlights respond initially but drop out or reset randomly during riding
Your BMW's dashboard shows a CAN bus or accessory-related error
For any of these, contact support with:
Your BMW model and year
Your CAN adapter type (4PIN / 6PIN / 8PIN)
A description of what you've tried
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't the Q5 Pro just turn on automatically with my ignition?
This is a deliberate safety and courtesy design. Auxiliary lights that switch on with ignition can dazzle other road users or draw unwanted attention in situations where the extra light isn't needed. The manual activation gesture gives you control over when your spotlights are active.
Once I've activated the spotlights, will they stay on until I turn them off?
Yes. Once activated, the spotlights remain on until you use the turn signal switch to turn them off (using the same long-press or triple-press). The 5-second timeout only affects Wonder Wheel control mode, not the spotlights' on/off state.
Do I need to re-activate the spotlights every ride?
The spotlights themselves remember their state, but activation gestures reset when your bike is fully powered down. On your next ride, you'll perform the turn signal gesture once to bring them back to your last-used mode.
Why doesn't the RLC3 need this activation?
The RLC3 uses a dedicated handlebar-mounted knob and button, so there's no shared control to disambiguate. Its dial is always "in spotlight control mode" because that's its only function. The RLC CAN-X activation exists because the Wonder Wheel serves multiple purposes on your BMW.
Can I disable the 5-second timeout?
Not currently. The timeout is a core part of how the RLC CAN-X coexists with your bike's other Wonder Wheel functions. Disabling it would cause menu navigation and spotlight adjustment to conflict with each other.
Is the activation gesture the same on all compatible BMW models?
Yes. The turn signal long-press / triple-press and the Wonder Wheel right-side long-press behave the same way across all BMW models supported by the RLC CAN-X.
I did the long-press activation but the spotlights flashed and then went dark again — what's happening?
The flash confirms activation, but the spotlights should stay in their previous mode (yellow DRL or white beam). If they go fully dark after flashing, contact support — this could indicate a power or connection issue.
