Bluetooth Headset Microphone Not Working with Android Auto

Android Auto Bluetooth microphone issue - Currently unsupported, use iPhone/CarPlay for full functionality

Updated over 3 weeks ago

When using Android Auto with Bluetooth helmet communication systems (such as Cardo, Sena, or similar devices), the microphone may not function properly on Android phones, while working perfectly on iPhones.

Symptoms:

  • Bluetooth headset pairs successfully with the R7M Display

  • Audio output works correctly (navigation, music, calls)

  • Microphone does not activate when using Android Auto

  • Voice commands and phone calls cannot be made through the headset

  • Same headset works without issues on iPhone devices

Current Status:

This is a known limitation with Android Auto's Bluetooth implementation.

Unfortunately, the RiderNav R7M Display does not currently support Bluetooth headset microphone functionality when using Android Auto. This is not specific to our device—it's a widespread compatibility issue between Android Auto and external Bluetooth audio devices.

Why This Happens: Android Auto handles Bluetooth audio routing differently than iOS/CarPlay. When connected via Android Auto, the system often routes microphone input through the phone itself rather than the connected Bluetooth headset, even when audio output works correctly.

Workarounds:

  • Use your phone's built-in microphone for voice commands (though this is not ideal while riding)

  • Consider using CarPlay with an iPhone if hands-free voice control is essential for your use

Future Updates: We are monitoring this issue and will provide updates if a solution becomes available through future firmware updates or Android Auto improvements.
