Manual Firmware Update via SD Card

Manual SD card firmware update guide for R7M v1.3.1 and below. Use when OTA updates fail.

Updated this week

📌 When to Use This Method

Use this manual update method if:

  • Your R7M is running firmware v1.3.1 or below

  • OTA (Over-The-Air) update fails or doesn't complete successfully

  • You're unable to connect to Wi-Fi for OTA updates

  • You prefer manual installation for any reason

📦 What You'll Need

Before starting, please prepare the following:

  • A microSD card
This is required only for system updates and is not included with the device. You will need to purchase and install one separately.

  • A computer with an SD card reader

📥 Step 1: Download the Firmware

💾 Step 2: Prepare the SD Card

Insert the microSD card into your computer’s card reader, then copy the downloaded firmware file to the root directory of the card. This means the file should be placed in the main folder, not inside any subfolder. After that, safely eject the microSD card from your computer.

🔧 Step 3: Install the Firmware Update

Please follow the steps below in the exact order:

  1. Make sure the RiderNav Display is powered off.

  2. Remove the device from the BMW navigation cradle.

  3. Confirm the screen is completely off.

  4. Insert the microSD card into the side card slot until it clicks into place.

  5. Power on the device by either:

    • mounting it back onto the BMW navigation cradle, or

    • connecting it to a power source using a USB-C cable.

Once powered on, the device will automatically detect the firmware file and begin the update process. Progress information will be shown on the screen.

Do not interrupt the update process.
Do not power off the device, remove the microSD card, or disconnect the device from its power source during the update.

When the update is complete, the device will restart automatically. The first startup after the update may take slightly longer than usual.

⏱️ Update Duration

  • Expected time: 5-15 minutes depending on firmware size

  • The screen will show progress during installation

  • Device will restart automatically when complete

✅ Verify Successful Update

After the device restarts:

  1. Go to Settings → System → About

  2. Check the firmware version number

  3. Confirm it shows the version you installed
